Katzenkralle wächst auf dem Hochlandterritorium von Peru und im Dschungel der Regenwälder Amazonas. Indianer aus den peruanischen Stämmen halten schon 2000 Jahre lang diese Pflanze für eine heilige Pflanze und für „Mittel gegen alle Krankheiten“. Rinde der Katzenkralle verwendeten die Indianer gegen Fieber, Arthritis, Geschwüre, Geschlechtskrankheiten, Verdauungsstörungen, Hautprobleme und sogar als kontrazeptives Mittel. Außerdem wurde entdeckt, dass die örtlichen Einwohner an den Tumorkrankheiten nicht leiden.
